cyrusfarivar.com "Being a good writer is 3% talent, 97% not being distracted by the Internet." This is all too true: There are people all around, but few of them are passengers. They are touts, hawkers, vagrants, drifters, thieves — a melee of dubiously intended hangers-around, each of them eyeing you with the stubborn, languid glare of a vulture. Set against a back wall, the sole ATM is flanked by armed guards, whose duties are particularly effortless, since the machine doesn’t work. There is nowhere to sit, no seats. Which really is all right because the worst thing you can do is [suite...]

Arrival in Dakar, Senegal « Will's Way
Dakar airport arrival was relatively painless and practically on time at around 5:40am local time (Greenwich mean time). Descending the portable stairs wheeled up to the airplane, we walked to a bus that took us to the main terminal for baggage. In the bus, I chatted in French, the lingua franca around here, with a friendly guy about what I thought were the Dakar airport closures. He exclaimed with surprise: “Dakar airport will also close?!? I asked what he meant and he clarified that it was Bamako airport that would be closed for renovations through November 7. So, that solved the [suite...]

KO In Senegal: To Turkey and Back
Before the trip I had to do some office work in Dakar so that's how I spent the day before. My flight was at noon which is an odd time for flights out of Dakar (normally flights leave between 10pm-5am) so the airport was really empty. While waiting to board I met a nice Egyptian man who has a daughter my age. He's working in The Gambia and only gets to go home to Egypt once a year, he had to fly through Istanbul to get home but he was really excited. I also met a nice family from Burkina Faso who lives in Dakar and was going to turkey on vacation. The Dakar-Istanbul flight is the farthest [suite...]

Looking back at what was penned
Thursday 2/28/2008 9:05am Dakar, Ganalé Hotel Voila! I’ve arrived safely in Senegal. Thank God! I had a very good flight, enjoyed the food, and most of all, I am enjoying a book I purchased at the JFK airport called ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ by Elizabeth Gilbert. In many ways I can relate to her experiences and her passions and I really love it. Right now I’m at the hotel. It’s pretty nice. I have air-conditioning and a TV! My supervisor will be dropping by at 12:40pm and we’ll have lunch. Hmmm…food. I’m actually pretty hungry. I wonder if I’ll like the local food. But that’s [suite...]

So the next time you are in Ghana driving from Kotoka International Airport to Hotel Novotel in Victoria Borg, Accra or you just want to drive from Nairobi to Kampala, visit Google Maps and allow us to help you get to your destination". However informed insiders in the region confirmed that Google maps in Africa are not 100% up to date, and local users have reported that GPS, where available, does not sometimes work due to out of date maps, bandwidth and satellite signals' or software issues. To the north I could see the blurred gleam of the lighthouse at Dakar sending its friendly beam out into the night. I switched off the navigation lights, for the lighted cabin seemed to make the darkness outside more intense as I peered vainly through the windows trying to distinguish the horizon. “It must get light soon,” I thought, glancing at the clock, to realize that it was only twenty minutes since I had left Thies.” (Jean Batten – solo round the world aviatrix 1909 -1982) I’ve often wondered what drives a person like Jean Batten to explore beyond the norm: to set records that [suite...]

Dakar back to Africa 'a 50:50 chance' | Hell for Leather
According to helicopter tow truck operator and Dakar race director Etienne Lavigne, the epic race stands “a 50:50 chance” of returning to Africa next year, although this time around, it could be through relatively terrorist free countries like Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. Yeah, that doesn’t sound much safer than west Africa to us either, but a return to the Dakar’s spiritual home does appear to hold significant appeal to the race’s organizers. > The current route through Argentina and Chile has proved surprisingly successful for the last two years, not only for its political ease and [suite...]
