Surprising Senegal - Budget Travel

Tourists use Dakar as a base, and cheap but modern hotels in the city center are not hard to fine. Try the four-star Hotel la Croix Sud (20 Avenue Albert Sarraut, +221/889-7878; lacroixdusud.net), a classy and chic hotel with renovated rooms with TV, private baths, and a sophisticated lounge in a 1951 building, in the center of Dakar near the main plaza of the city, Place D'Independence. Smart rooms start at a cool $108. A more simple option is the L'Oceanic Hotel (5 rue de Thann; +221/822-2044) near the main market in Dakar. It's popular with French tourists, has a cozy patio bar, and rooms [suite...]

AfroCubanLatinJazz ©: ORCHESTRA BAOBAB ''MADE IN DAKAR'' (SENEGAL ...

Orchestra Baobab kick-started a musical renaissance here, enabling a whole generation of younger stars – including Youssou N’Dour, Baaba Maal and Cheikh Lô – who have given Senegal as high a musical profile as any other country in Africa. But Orchestra Baobab are the ones who started it all. They’re the bridge between the old Africa and the new. And no one has got more of Dakar’s diversity down on disc than Orchestra Baobab. Centred around singers Rudi Gomis and Balla Sidibe and visionary guitarist Barthélemy Attisso, this band of rugged individualists came together in 1970 as [suite...]

Dakar is NOT Senegal

After spending the night having an awesome campfire in a friends’ village we all headed to the beach – where we used to go when we were in training! We spend the night in really cute huts that were Senegalese but clean and adorable. And spent 2 days on the beach…before we left we visited our host families from training and ate at my favorite Senegalese burger shack JNext we headed on over to training. We were supposed to stay with new host families but after a few days the training staff let us stay at the center – basically this means we got more time to hang out with other Americans [suite...]

Jean Batten: aviatrix, explorer and glamour queen. « the ...

To the north I could see the blurred gleam of the lighthouse at Dakar sending its friendly beam out into the night. I switched off the navigation lights, for the lighted cabin seemed to make the darkness outside more intense as I peered vainly through the windows trying to distinguish the horizon. “It must get light soon,” I thought, glancing at the clock, to realize that it was only twenty minutes since I had left Thies.” (Jean Batten – solo round the world aviatrix 1909 -1982) I’ve often wondered what drives a person like Jean Batten to explore beyond the norm: to set records that [suite...]

Orchestra Baobab - 'A Night at Club Baobab' - Microfundo

Listen To 'A Night at Club Baobab' Filtering Cuban music through West African musical traditions, Senegal's legendary Orchestra Baobab, €”formed in 1970 and officially disbanded in 1987, is riding again with most of its key players in place. Baobab started out in post-colonial Senegal's most cosmopolitan milieu. They were chosen as the house band for the then-new Baobab nightclub in central Dakar. Baobab's earliest recordings, recently reissued on 'A Night at Club Baobab' mostly sound like guitar-driven Afro-Cuban grooves with beautifully elastic Wolof vocals overlaid. From the start with [suite...]

Al Afifa - from 50 euros per single room and 56 - for a double, suites - from 70 euros. Climate control in the rooms. Warm water. TV. Pool. To protect themselves from the meeting with a fan instead of climate control (in a hotel with a proud name Continental, for example, air conditioners have only 15 rooms of the 22's), his gaze is drawn to the business-class hotel: double room at Novotel or Sofitel Teranga will cost from 114 euros.

Chasing the Dakar Rally: Beginner Guide | Motorcycle News

Not unlike the Tour de France on the last stage for the winner (barring disaster), it is basically a victory lap. Marcos and Alejandro are going to finish #1 and #2 in the Dakar, and the Argentine faithful are out to welcome them home. Willie and I bully our way at 80 mph through two dozen cars and motorcycles-sometimes riding five-wide on a two-lane winding road-all trying to catch Marcos. Finally, we are riding within feet of him. The three of us are in Axo gear, so the crowd thinks we are part of his entourage. We are mobbed once again by the thousands that have come to catch a glimpse of [suite...]

Bamako to Dakar

We were made welcome back at the Farid hotel and set straight of to Just4U that night. A young band was playing tonight and I bought a copy of their CD. The whole place was full of teen girls who knew every word that was sung and who danced with utter pleasure and unselfconsciously.     The next day we lunched again under the enormous baobab at the Institut Francais. Then I negotiated with a cab driver to take us up the coats for three hours and back. Great decision. Saw the lighthouse atop a volcanic plug with views over Dakar, at Les Mamelles, the new mosquee, La Divinite, Ngor beach, les [suite...]

Bamako-Dakar express

I got to Dakar from Bamako by bus. The bus is cheaper than flying, but this is not why I chose to travel by land. I decided to bus down to Dakar mainly because the physician I was working with in Bamako told me that on the road you get to look at the villages, meet people at the stops and cross the entire length of Senegal. Flying is fast, impersonal and it lacks the authentic feeling of travelling through space and crossing borders. I listened to him, and felt suddenly adventurous. I was ready to depart and arrive to the most western point of the African continent; pointe des Almadies in [suite...]

Dakar Rally and Defying Authority « Winding North

(The following post is a bit outdated, it occurred around about 9 August) After completing the 4-day, 3-night southwest Bolivian circuit through a guide, I headed towards La Paz, Bolivia’s de facto capital. I left Tupiza quite late (I had been in the internet cafe all morning), knowing that I had at least a 5-hour drive ahead of me. Naturally enough, the advice that the locals had given me on road conditions proved to be completely false. As the sun was setting, I found myself running the Bolivian leg of the Dakar Rally, beginning to seriously question whether or not ‘paviemento’ and  [suite...]

Senegal, filthy, filthy Senegal. Last night I dreamed of you…

I dreamed I had never left Senegal, was still with Annie there, walking Dakar, standing on the balcony of the Hotel Oceanic spitting olive pits to the street below. We were separated, and I found myself alone on the streets, walking, in the way that one may walk for two reasons or not, looking for her, and exploring for myself. I found a clear shallow river and with the help of a young man, sincere and hunch-backed as a mutt, began a game of football there, other players rising from the waters. We won terribly, easily, again and again, splashing across the rocks. The game was short, but when [suite...]

St. James graduate is letting God guide the way

"I spent three weeks in the capital of Dakar and outlying villages." The first part of the trip included ministering to the Talibe (TAH-lee-bay) boys, young people who can be seen all over Dakar. "They are poor and wear tattered clothing, and carry cans used to collect money. The boys are usually sent by their parents to receive teaching from elders in the city, but most of them end up on street corners begging for money," Whitaker explained. "We organized activities for them during the day, similar to vacation bible school in the U.S. We also went into villages and held [suite...]

KO In Senegal: To Turkey and Back

Before the trip I had to do some office work in Dakar so that's how I spent the day before. My flight was at noon which is an odd time for flights out of Dakar (normally flights leave between 10pm-5am) so the airport was really empty. While waiting to board I met a nice Egyptian man who has a daughter my age. He's working in The Gambia and only gets to go home to Egypt once a year, he had to fly through Istanbul to get home but he was really excited. I also met a nice family from Burkina Faso who lives in Dakar and was going to turkey on vacation. The Dakar-Istanbul flight is the farthest [suite...]

The Dark reality of child beggars in Dakar « STOP THE TRAFFIK blog ...

A blog that insists people should never be bought or sold. Never, ever. “Abdoulaye Ba, 10, looked right, then left, before timidly approaching the taxi and holding out his hand.” A 10-year-old begging is nothing new in Dakar, “but the fear in his eyes is” (http://ow.ly/2Ey8f). A few days ago police chased him away from the intersection where he used to beg as part of a national ban on begging. Now he hangs around a gas station under the police’s radar, where he earns half of what he did. Child begging is a big problem in Senegal. One significant reason why is because of the number [suite...]

Thursday 2/28/2008 9:05am Dakar, Ganalé Hotel Voila! I’ve arrived safely in Senegal. Thank God! I had a very good flight, enjoyed the food, and most of all, I am enjoying a book I purchased at the JFK airport called ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ by Elizabeth Gilbert. Senegal draws to a close

About 4 weeks ago, we touched down and dropped our bags in the Hotel Oceanic. Most of the kids have since told Laura and I they were nervous and thought the place was a dump. Today when we checked in, they couldn't wait to be in the A/C and have a real shower. On their first full day in Senegal, we took them down to the market where they were bombarded by vendors trying to sell them things they didn't want. Our students ended up with things in their hands and were pulled into shops without understanding what was going on. Today, walking around Dakar was a different story... We were a group of [suite...]
