Argentina BLOG » Post » Dakar Rally as a travel destination

The seven stages in as many days in Chile and the ubiquitous Atacama Desert form the heart of the Dakar Rally. The world’s driest region, 100 times drier than Death Valley sets the scene for four stages. From Copiapó via Antofagasta to Iquique and back again – the Great North, a plateau zone with the saltpetre-rich boulder and stone desert, is the most demanding part of the “Dakar” from the technological and sporting aspects. Iquique, the most northern point of the rally and popular holiday resort for surfers owes its pleasant climate and high humidity, in contrast to the weather [suite...]

Arrival in Dakar, Senegal « Will's Way

Dakar airport arrival was relatively painless and practically on time at around 5:40am local time (Greenwich mean time). Descending the portable stairs wheeled up to the airplane, we walked to a bus that took us to the main terminal for baggage. In the bus, I chatted in French, the lingua franca around here, with a friendly guy about what I thought were the Dakar airport closures. He exclaimed with surprise: “Dakar airport will also close?!? I asked what he meant and he clarified that it was Bamako airport that would be closed for renovations through November 7. So, that solved the [suite...]

KO In Senegal: To Turkey and Back

Before the trip I had to do some office work in Dakar so that's how I spent the day before. My flight was at noon which is an odd time for flights out of Dakar (normally flights leave between 10pm-5am) so the airport was really empty. While waiting to board I met a nice Egyptian man who has a daughter my age. He's working in The Gambia and only gets to go home to Egypt once a year, he had to fly through Istanbul to get home but he was really excited. I also met a nice family from Burkina Faso who lives in Dakar and was going to turkey on vacation. The Dakar-Istanbul flight is the farthest [suite...]

BoggBlog: Part II: Dakar, Senegal

The Hotel Farid was great: quiet, clean, reasonably priced, centrally located in the downtown core to be convenient, had a bathtub, air conditioning and a television. Cons on Dakar: most of what I liked was what made it more western and less African: the European-style restaurants and residential neighbourhoods. The open markets were not my thing: they were immensely hectic. After all the warnings I had heard and read about, I also never felt completely comfortable and safe in Dakar, always being a bit wary, always looking over my shoulder a bit, and I could never afford to truly slow down, [suite...]

Tales from a Travel-loving Teaching Assistant: In love with Lisboa

A young couple also staying at our hostel joined us (they teach at an international school in Dakar, Africa), and we all enjoyed our time at the small, smoke-free, local hot-spot to get good food and a good show. Shenning and I split a meal of fresh bacalhau (cod… what Portugal is famous for), shrimp, onions, potatoes, and peppers, all of which came in a copper pot and soaking in a simmering sauce. Oh, how I love good seafood. Portugal’s unique musical tradition is called fado, soulful folk music accompanied by twelve-string guitars. Throughout our meal, the lights dimmed for a few [suite...]

Dakar West Africa, Dakar city, Dakar Senegal tourism

Dakar is one of the undiscovered pearls of West Africa, although you might know it best for the annual rally that it lends its name to. And just as the Paris-Dakar Rally is not just any conventional rally you might be used to following, Dakar is unlike any African experience you might have undertaken. Exuberant and vivacious, Dakar has burst into life ever since it cast off three centuries of French colonialism in 1960 and it is almost as if the city has been racing against time itself to make up for every lost moment it had to endure. Dakar is dragging Senegal screaming and dancing by the [suite...]

Constatant [suite...]

Event -The Barbican BLAZE Festival: 19 June – 31 July

Album five, Bitte Orca (Domino), with its more settled line-up, has been acclaimed as the most complete effort to date, the Dirty Projectors at their most seductive and elusive. The band reference hip-hop and heavy rock, pop and pure imagination. Longstreth’s falsetto is unmistakable; a sign of the breath of the Projectors’ appeal is that their Stillness Is the Move – a slice of this avant-pop – was covered by Solange Knowles, bringing this gem to a whole new audience. ‘Utterly listenable … this is art-pop in which the words on either side of the hyphen are equally balanced’ [suite...]
